A Rally of Writers 2025

This is where I was all day yesterday.  Rally of Writers Conference (Video)

I had an excellent time making new friends, eating too much and drinking *all* the coffee, but most important of all, I learned about myself and what I’m capable of doing as a poet. Yes I said POET – This year, I focused on the poetry sessions all day since I’m going to publish a poetry book of my own soon. Ruelaine Stokes (Lansing’s poet laureate) and Jamaal May (Detroit poet) were especially helpful in getting me to look past my penchant for creating clever rhyming schemes, and immerse myself in the music, soul, resonance of a piece. And I got to cut up one of my poems into bits and pieces and reassemble it into something new (and darker, to my shock). I came away feeling like my poetry toolbox had been packed with strange new tools that are going to take time to adjust to the shape of my hand, but are of good quality, weight, and balance. I’m grateful and excited for what’s ahead.
